REVIEW: (contains NO spoilers)
I won the book Roar in a giveaway, and I went into it thinking that it was just going to be another one of those new fantasy releases that I would give an average rating. But I was SO SURPRISED by this book!!! I LOVED it!! It has quickly become my favorite 2017 young adult release!! I am so excited to review this for you, so let’s get into it!
Roar is a young adult fantasy novel about this girl named Aurora. She doesn’t have the storm magic her family needs for her to become queen of her kingdom one day, so she’s forced to marry a powerful prince to save her kingdom. Until she realizes there may be another solution to her problem. She happens upon a group of storm hunters, and decides to steal magic so that she won’t have to marry this prince.
Let me just say that the first chapter or two was painful. I wasn’t sure what was going on at first. You can definitely tell that this novel was written by a romance author (this is Cora Carmack’s first fantasy novel ever) because of the heavy romance in this novel. But, stick with this book until the plot really starts picking up and you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!
The magic system in this book was amazing!!! I’ve never read a story about storm magic before, so this was a magical world completely unlike anything I’ve ever read, and I LOVE when that happens!! Basically, there are different types of storms that rage all over this land and people with storm magic can fight the storm and try to take its heart to conquer it and save people from it. Those are the royals, Stormlings. But the group that Aurora joins is a group of storm hunters. They were born without magic, but they’ve learned how to fight the storms and bottle up the storms’ magic. I enjoyed discovering the world and politics and good and evil so much in this story!!
The writing was gorgeous. Sometimes, an author’s writing is good, but it doesn’t quite fit the story. Cora Carmack’s writing fit her story perfect. It was fantastical and beautiful, and there were so many great quotes in this novel! Also, I can tell she’s a great romance author, and the way she wove romance into this story was amazing, as if she’s been writing fantasy books her whole life! There was definitely a little too much romance for me, but I totally love Aurora and her love interest together!!
Now for the characters. My favorite part. I loved the evil characters and the way their minds thought and planned. I loved Aurora! Her character arc was amazing – she went from being a naïve and sheltered princess to a strong storm hunter ready to control her kingdom, and I loved it!! I also really enjoyed the small band of storm hunters she met up with – Locke, Jinx, Bait, Sly, Ransom, and Duke. Jinx was one of my favorite characters, and I need a man like Locke in my life!
As you can probably already tell, I LOVED this story!! I rated it a 5/5 stars. It ended on such a huge cliffhanger, and the second book in the Stormheart series comes out next year! You can be sure I’ll be buying it as soon as possible! I totally recommend this for a wonderful, fantastical experience that will take your breath away!
