I have only ever attended one book event in my life. I know, I know, I need to go to more. Trust me, I really want to! It’s just that I’m a high school student, and it’s really hard to just stop in the middle of the school year and ask my parents to take me to a book event that is probably pretty far away. Anyway, you see my point.
But I have been to one book event, and it was one of the best nights of my life.
This happened on September 6th of this year. Now, I am a HUGE Sarah J. Maas fan. I’ve read all of the Throne of Glass series and I’ve read the first book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy. Throne of Glass is one of my favorite series of all time!! So when I saw that Sarah was going on a book tour for the upcoming release of the 6th Throne of Glass book, Tower of Dawn and that she was coming to my state, I asked my mom and bought tickets immediately.
For those who bought tickets to the event, they would receive a signed copy of the book, a few little merch items related to the book, a seat in the auditorium to hear Sarah J. Maas speak, and a raffle ticket to be entered in a drawing to meet Sarah after she spoke. I knew there was a small chance I would win the drawing, but I was okay with that. I just wanted to attend my first bookish event, see Sarah J. Maas in the flesh, and get a signed copy of her new book!
The event was at 6:30 and at an art center about an hour and a half to two hours away from my house. So, my mom and I weren’t able to get there in time for all the fun pre-event stuff, but I was totally okay with that as long as I got to see Sarah. We rushed in and took our seats. I got my signed copy of Tower of Dawn (which had just been released a few days ago) as we walked inside. It’s one of my favorite books on my bookshelf now.
Sarah J. Maas walked out onto the stage and I almost cried. She and the moderator sat down in chairs on the stage. The moderator asked a few questions, but whenever she asked a question, Sarah would always expand on it a lot and go off on little rabbit trails, so the moderator really didn’t get too many questions in.
It was AMAZING. If you’ve ever seen pictures of her, you know that Sarah is gorgeous. We didn’t have the best seats because we got there when most of the seats were already filled, but I could still see her perfectly fine! She talked about the Throne of Glass series, world, and characters, and she told us what to expect from the newest book. She also talked about her life and her love for Lord of the Rings and Legolas (which everyone found hilarious). It was SO incredible to hear an author I admire so much speak, and I enjoyed every single moment of it!!
Her talk lasted about an hour and a half. Then, the ticket numbers were drawn. Everyone had been excitedly awaiting this, all of us wanting to be able to meet Sarah. My number was 276. I could not believe my ears when I heard that number called out. 276. I was going to get to meet Sarah J. Maas!!!!! I honestly don’t think I’d ever been more excited for anything in my life! Only 50 tickets were drawn, and mine was one of them. I usually don’t have that kind of luck.
I grabbed my book and rushed to the line forming on the side of the auditorium leading up to the stage. I was in the very back of the line. I’m serious – there were only like 5 people behind me. But it was the perfect place to be in that line of excited girls, because there were two girls behind me who I talked to the entire hour and a half that we waited. I am a very quiet person, so I’m glad they were outgoing and talked to everyone in the line. One of them was dressed up as my favorite character from the series, Manon. We laughed and talked about books as we crept closer to the stage where Sarah and her husband, Josh, sat.
Finally, it was my turn. I was SO nervous. I had never met an author before. I wanted to hug her, but I didn’t know if that was allowed, you know? So I told her my name and that I love to write as well. I told her that I am working on a fantasy novel also and that I love her books. She personalized my copy of Tower of Dawn, and wrote: Keep Writing, Rebekah!
Yes, that book is now one of my most prized possessions.
Sarah was incredibly nice and even more beautiful up close!!! She laughs so easily and was so fun to talk to for a few minutes! I’ve attached some pictures below so you can see 🙂
So the night of September 6th was basically one of the best nights of my life. I got to meet one of my favorite authors of all time and get my book signed and personalized by her! I know that I will never forget that night. I’m so grateful for the chance to meet her, and I can’t wait to attend more book events and author signings in the future!!
If you ever get the chance to attend an event like this, GO! You will NOT regret it!
