Shift by M.A. George REVIEW!

SHIFTShift

By: M.A. George

Genre: YA sci-fi/fantasy

Publication date: June 1, 2018

Goodreads synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Perry Teasdale is a dreamer.
She’s not the kind of dreamer who waltzes through fields of wildflowers, twirling her skirts in a starry-eyed daze; or the kind who aspires to be the biggest rock star the world has ever known (not that she’d complain, if that accidentally happened). She’s the kind of dreamer who can’t get a decent night’s rest, because her sleep is flooded with scenes from other worlds—ones that seem as real as life itself.
Mind-blowing dreams may sound like loads of fun, but when they start to bleed into Perry’s waking hours—confusing the line between dream and reality and keeping her in a sleep-deprived fog no amount of caffeine can cure—Perry’s not exactly thrilled.
Try as she might to shake the dreams from her mind, they keep gaining speed, growing ever more vivid and intense…until that hazy boundary between real and imaginary fades away, and Perry is forced to consider the impossible: Her dreams seem real, because they are.
When disaster strikes, sending Perry’s newfound normalcy into a tailspin, she takes the only logical path left: a whirlwind tour of the multiverse, scouring an ever-growing assortment of alternate realities for the missing piece—the missing person—to put her life together again.
Along the way, Perry enlists the help of an ancient wise woman (who may be a tad homicidal); a nerdy-in-all-the-right-ways mathematician (who knows all of Perry’s secrets, even before introducing himself); and a sword (because you can never go wrong with a sword).
At times hilarious—at times heartbreaking—Shift is sure to be, well, one of those two things.

my spoiler-free review:

It’s not very often that an obscure author sends me a book to review and it becomes one of my new favorite books… actually that’s never happened to me. At least, it had never happened before I read Shift by M.A. George. This book BLEW ME AWAY! Seriously, thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of her book. It’s already on the ‘favorites’ shelf on my goodreads, and I rated it 5/5 stars!!!

This is one of the best sci-fi/fantasy books I’ve ever read. The writing, the characters, the plot, and the world were all incredible. Absolutely amazing, fantastic, and about 1,000 other synonyms!

This is an honest review, and even though I was sent a copy of the book for free to review, that does not mean I am just making up the praise I am giving this book. I want to make that clear before I go into the details of this amazing novel!

Shift is about 17-year old Perry, her older brother Ezra, a very mysterious Max, and several other eccentric characters that you will meet along the way. It’s definitely a sci-fi book, and because I’ve only read a few sci-fi, I can say that this is one of my new favorite books in that genre! I don’t want to give away anything else about the plot that isn’t already alluded to in the synopsis, because I went into this book knowing almost nothing, and it was the perfect experience!

The beginning and ending of the book were both written perfectly! I was hooked from the very first chapter and the very first dream that Perry had. Sometimes, it takes me a while to get into books, but that was certainly not the case here! And that ending just had me wanting more… seriously, I can’t get enough of this world and these characters, and I need a sequel!

And while we’re sort of on the subject, let’s talk about the writing. M.A. George’s writing was BEAUTIFUL! Her descriptions of different worlds and dreams and characters were gorgeous, and her syntax was incredible. The writing flowed so easily and was easy to read, yet it still made you think and there were several words used that I didn’t know prior to reading the book.

The one thing I was a little unsure of was the plot. There isn’t a very strong plot, but it actually worked for this kind of story. You can’t call Shift a very plot-driven story, but that was okay because the characters and world building totally made up for that in every way! And the plot that did exist was still very essential to the story, and I really enjoyed it. There were several action scenes that were well-written and had me completely hooked the entire time.

The worlds were gorgeous – the author’s great writing really helped me to be able to picture the dreams Perry had and the places she went. I am completely captured by the cool sci-fi elements of the story. The entire idea for this story is genius, and it was so interesting and intriguing to read about. If I come up with an idea for a book that’s half as good as this, I’ll be able to write a really good book.

Alright, I saved the best for last… the characters!!! They were AMAZING. Perry was a great main character – SO sarcastic and witty! Her comebacks and jokes were astounding, and I have huge respect for the author being able to write humor like that. I laughed so many times, because of the humor woven into the pages! And then there’s Perry’s older brother, Ezra, whom she loves most in the entire world. His and Perry’s relationship was honestly sibling goals. I loved their banter and how close they were! All siblings should strive to be like Perry and Ezra. Then there’s Max Landry, who is everything I want in a guy – smart, nerdy, and super good-looking. I also loved sweet Nalya, full-of-himself Kellen, and crazy Aunt Jess. Oh, and we can’t forget Thaelia, who was so funny and such a grey character all around!

I loved them all. I loved the pop-culture references (the Lord of the Rings reference only like three pages in made me freak out), the nerdy jokes, and the beautiful relationships that totally shaped the story. This author really knows how to write characters that will stay with me for quite a while.

So… what do you think? Do I have you hooked yet? Are you ready to pick up M.A. George’s outstanding book? You better be. The writing was beautiful, the world(s) were so imaginative, and the characters were eccentric and hilarious and perfect. This book made me laugh (a LOT), cry, and cheer.

If you love sci-fi, fantasy, or any genre really, I HIGHLY recommend Shift!! If this review doesn’t convince you to read this book, I don’t know what will, because it’s basically full of me just fangirling over its awesomeness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my bookish babblings for today, and happy reading!!!

~ Rebekah

M. A. George is part mother of two adorable children, part super top secret agent…Oops, probably just lost that job.
Writing is what keeps her up into the wee hours of the night. Fortunately, she has a lot of energy (Read: caffeine is her friend). She has a bit of an obsession with music (It does a fantastic job of tuning out rambunctious children while she attempts to focus).
She sincerely hopes people out there enjoy reading her work as much as she enjoys writing it. And if anyone hears of work for a super top secret agent, she’s now available (Discretion guaranteed…).
